The Only True God

Many of us who love God's word would like to think we know exactly who God is. I hope we can agree that he desires to reveal himself; it follows therefore that we should expect to find a clear answer. I challenge you to read through the scriptures below, leaving your presuppositions behind, and let the Word teach you.

Who is "The True God"?

1 Thessalonians 1:9-10
For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

John 17:3
This is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Yeshua Messiah, whom you have sent.

1 John 5:20
He is the true God and eternal life.

But YHWH is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. At his wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure his indignation.

"For a long time Israel was without the true God, and without a teaching priest and without law, but when in their distress they turned to YHVH, the God of Israel, and sought him, he was found by them."

Who is "The Only God?"

Deut 4:35,39 “To you it was shown, that you might know that YHWH is God; there is no other besides him… know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that YHWH is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.”

Acts 7:2 "And Stephen said: “Brothers and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,"

1 Timothy 6:13-16 " I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see."

John 5:44 "How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?"

John 17:3 "And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."

Romans 16:27 "to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen."

Matthew 4:10 "Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”" [Luke 4:8]

Jude 1:25
to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

Who is "The God of our Fathers?" [200x in the bible]

Genesis 26:24
And YHWH appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father…"

Exodus 3:15
God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘YHWH, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

Acts 3:13
The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him.

God is the Father

John 4:23-24 “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

1 Corinthians 8:6 "for us there is but one God, the Father"

1 Corinthians 15:24 "then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power."

1 Peter 1:3 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!"

Conclusion:

I believe it was clear enough, based on God's word, that the Only God, the True God, is The Father. And our Messiah is the Son of God, but not "the one God." This is true for every biblical author that has anything to say about it. No trinity was mentioned. No plural unity was mentioned. Every time "The True God", "The One God", "The only true God", or "The God of our Fathers"  is mentioned, it is clearly the Father, YHWH.

Yes, Jesus/Yeshua is called "god" a small number of times, but so are Moses, David, Solomon, the Angels, the Judges, and "all to whom the word of God came." More on this later!

The One God is the Father alone.

Jesus, the Man

It is much easier, in our time, to get an answer to "who is Jesus?" than it is for the question " what  is Jesus?" For the former: Jesus is our Messiah, our Redeemer; he is lowly, meek, full of compassion. He is the Coming King, our Good Shepherd, etc. But to the latter question, there has been much debate and confusion. Does he have two wills or one? Is he God, a part of God, or the Son of God? Is he "man," or is he  a man? I think the Scriptures are quite clear, if we let them speak for themselves. The confusion often comes from traditions obscuring the meaning, or from a preconceived notion forcing the text to say what it is not saying. Let's have a look: What is Jesus? Genesis 3:15 " I will put enmity b etween you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed ; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel." Deuteronomy 18:16-19 "For this is what you asked of YHWH your God at Horeb on the ...
